lan Gordon-Lennox was born in 1958 in Ottawa, Canada. He studied classical music and jazz in Geneva.
Since the late 1970's, he has toured in Europe, Russia, the Baltic States, Africa and the USA, playing with musicians such as Glen Ferris, Erik Truffaz, Barre Phillips, Tom Varner or Dominique Pyfarely in numerous festivals, including Montreux and Willisau.
His marked interest for audiovisual arts and all forms of on-stage expression lead him to compose for several bands as well as for theatre, "theatrical music" and dance, as well as participating in many recordings.
Teacher at the Montreux Jazz Conservatory and at the Professionnal Jazz School in Geneva, he has also founded his own band,'lan Gordon-Lennox Low Brass'. They issued their first CD in 1999.

Oester studierte von 1983 bis 1987 klassischen Kontrabass bei Bela Szedlak, ausserdem von 1986 bis 1989 an der Swiss Jazz School bei Peter Frei. Er arbeitete als Sideman mit Dewey Redman, Joe Lovano, Michael Brecker, Ray Anderson, Arthur Blythe, Joey Baron, Chris Potter, Marc Johnson, Bill Stewart, Gary Bartz, Jim Black, Walter Norris, Michel Godard, Adam Nussbaum und vielen anderen. Er leitete zahlreiche eigene Bands, darunter mehrere Trio-Formationen, u. a. das Trio Oester mit Mike del Ferro und Gilbert Paeffgen, Trio Weiss, Oester Pfammatter, Who mit Michel Wintsch und Gerry Hemingway, Braff, Oester, Rohrer, The Bridge mit Philipp Schaufelberger und Pierre Favre, mit dessen Ensemble er das ECM-Album Fleuve (2006) einspielte, ferner verschiedene Quartett- und Quintett-Formationen. Im Duo arbeitete er auch mit Hiroko Takada und Andreas Scharrer.
Neben Alben als Sideman und Bandleader veröffentlichte er 2007 das Soloalbum Blospermint Suite. Oester ist Professor für Kontrabass und Ensemblespiel an der Jazzabteilung der Musikhochschule Basel.
